The Netherlands Institute of Jesuit Studies (NIJS) was founded in the fall of 2001. In an active way it seeks to promote and support the research into the history, culture and spirituality of the Jesuit order, throughout the world, in the past and the present. This is all the more desirable, since interest in these areas is increasing internationally, especially among non-Jesuits. The NIJS provides a specialized library where this kind of research can be done. It also is available for those who have questions regarding the Jesuit order.

The NIJS can be reached by public transportation: tram lines 1, 2 and 5, stop ‘Koningsplein’. It can be visited by appointment. Just across the NIJS the library of the University of Amsterdam is located, which has a very large collection of publications by and on Jesuits.
The library of the NIJS contains about 4000 volumes. Regularly books will be added, thanks to purchases and donations. It contains works on the history, culture and spirituality of the Society of Jesus. Works by Jesuits are not included, unless they fall within the categories mentioned above.

- Spiritual Exercises
- Spirituality
- Pastoral activities
- Cultural activities
- Anti-Jesuit writings
- History of the Jesuit order according to countries
- Biographies of individual Jesuits
Besides the library includes volumes of journals, published by Jesuits, and wholly or partially related to the history, spirituality and culture of the Society of Jesus. The journals Studiën and its successor Streven (streven@skynet.be) are available in their entirety. Relevant reference works can be consulted as well.
Catalogues with data about all men who became members of the Dutch Jesuit Province are available from 1849.
Books and journals can be consulted on site, and cannot be borrowed.
New acquisitions to the library will be published on the net regularly.
- Het NIJS heeft op 11 februari 2006 tijdens de antiquarenbeurs in het Hessenhuis te Antwerpen bij antiquariaat Wilfried van den Bergh (Korbeek-Lo) een handschrift kunnen verwerven, dat inzicht biedt in het onderwijs van de jezuïeten in de achttiende eeuw.
Het handschrift meet 27.7 x 18.5 cm., en is als volgt samengesteld: 1 + 70 + 88 + 122 + 6 + [17] p. De tekst in Latijn en Frans is met een goed leesbare hand geschreven. Tegen het einde zijn pagina's bijgebonden met tekeningen, een gedrukte thesis uit 1750 (Marseille), en 6 eenzijdig gedrukte pagina's met illustraties van kleiner formaat (Barcelona 1752).
De schrijver noteerde op het voorblad: Cursus philosophicus. Tomus 2dus physicam particularem continens. auctore p. ignatio ludovico Commin soc. jesu presbytero. 1750.
Ignace Louis Commin werd op 24 december 1713 geboren te Avignon, waar hij op 7 september 1730 intrad in de jezuïetenorde. Op 2 februari 1747 legde hij te Marseille zijn laatste gelofte af, nadat hij meerdere jaren filosofie had onderwezen en procurator was geweest. In 1753 was hij procurator te Avignon, en in 1758 in het college te Lyon. In 1766 was hij in het noviciaat van Avignon. Daarna raakt men zijn spoor bijster. Hij is overleden na 1788.
At 11 February 2006, during the antiquarian fair in the Hessenhuis at Antwerp (Belgium), NIJS bought from antiquarian Wilfried van den Bergh (Korbeek-Lo) a manuscript, that gives information about Jesuit education in the eighteenth century.
The manuscript measures 27.7 by 18.5 cm., and includes the following: 1 + 70 + 88 + 122 + 6 + [17] p. Towards the end several pages with drawings are added, a printed thesis from 1750 (Marseille), and 6 smaller pages with illustrations, printed at Barcelona in 1752.
On the title page the athor wrote: Cursus philosophicus. Tomus 2dus physicam particularem continens. auctore p. ignatio ludovico Commin soc. jesu presbytero. 1750.
Ignace Louis Commin was born 24 December 1713 at Avignon (France), where he entered the Jesuit order 7 September 1730. 2 Februari 1747 he pronounced his final vows at Marseille, after having taught philosophy and having been procurator. In 1753 he was procurator at Avignon, and in 1758 in the college of Lyon. In 1766 he was in the noviciate of Avignon. After that no data are available. Hij died after 1788.
Since its foundation in 2001 NIJS has started a series of publications.
